The sensory experience is based on a traditional whisky tasting, but adds in elements of surprise. In this case, the general rule is blind tasting – we do not reveal the brands and expressions of whisky until the very end. This way, guests can evaluate the whiskies for what they are, not their preconceived notions.
As with all tastings, the session begins with a welcome cocktail, getting folks in the mood to taste and have fun.
We begin with blindfolds and various basic items for nosing: lemon peel, coffee beans, licorice, clove, cinnamon, fresh berries, banana, honeycomb, sage, rosemary, etc. Guests are asked to identify what they are sensing. The results are not as easy as you’d think because sensory perception is often skewed by visual cues. This portion of the format generally yields a lot of laughs.
After we’ve exercised the nose and palate, we can move on to the whiskies, blindfolds removed. Each progressive whisky involves discussion amongst the group in terms of what’s being tasted.
In the end, hilarious toasts ensue and the whiskies are revealed much to the surprise of many folks.
